The Eden Valley
The Eden Valley is situated between The Pennine Mountains and The Lake District. It stretches from the south of Kirkby Stephen to Wetheral, near Carlisle and is a nature lovers' paradise.
The area is relatively undiscovered with quiet roads and tracks which make it ideal for walking and cycling.
Our cottage is adjacent to High Stand Forest with its nature trails and inhabitants of red squirrels, roe dear, badgers and other fauna. Angling can be arranged for you on the ponds in the forest.
The scenic Carlisle-Settle Railway runs through the Eden Valley and the nearest station is at Armathwaite, only three miles away.
The nearest access for the Carlisle-Newcastle Railway is at Wetheral Station, 4 miles away.
Following the River Eden you will find charming red sandstone villages with ancient castles, churches and inns.
The names of these villages reflect strong Nordic influences. Only recently, four Viking graves have been discovered at nearby Cumwhitton, which is very rare in England.
Pre-dating the Vikings, there are many stone circles in the area. The finest example is Lang Meg and her daughters at Little Salkeld, the third largest circle in England.
At Wetheral there is a magnificent Victorian viaduct which towers above the river. It is worth a walk along the footpath over it to Corby for spectacular views and a drink at the pub on the other side (open all day).
Other villages nearby worth visiting are Langwathby, with Ostrich World and Little Salkeld with its working 18th century flour mill, which supplies The Village Bakery at Melmerby.
